“Happy birthday, Fien!”
It was the start of an amazing day on our trip in South Africa.
I mean, when your friend is having her birthday more than 10,000 kilometers away from home, you have to do something special. Right? We thought so too.
Aside from providing our chocolate-crazed friend with chocolate and Amarula to help her through the anguish of getting older, we made sure to have a fun day set in store. And even though there might have been some teeny-tiny blunders (who can really avoid those?), it was mostly a day full of bliss.
Planning and arriving at our Tsitsikamma adventure
Since the birthday girl is quite the adventurous type (I mean, look at her being badass in the photo!), we planned a zipline adventure at Tsitsikamma Falls Adventure Park with Zipline Tour. The company’s website gives the following information:
Situated 8km east of the Storms River Bridge on the N2, Tsitsikamma Falls Adventure Park offers spectacular Zipline adventure slides across the Kruis River. The eight slides, of which the longest is 211m, zigzag along cables across the river gorge, as high as 50m above the water in some places. Each section presents its own surprises, adventure, wonders and beautiful views over indigenous Tsitsikamma fauna and flora. Users can control the speed of their descent, allowing them to stop mid cable to take in some of the awesome views over the waterfalls.
Sounds like fun, doesn’t it?
It absolutely was.
But before we could zipline across such beautiful scenery, we first had to find the place.
And that was quite the challenge.
After first arriving at Tsitsikamma National Park instead of Tsitsikamma Falls Adventure Park, we eventually ended up at a shop of another company that offered zipline tours. Oops. Fortunately, our third stop was the company we had booked our tour with. We were more than happy that we had finally arrived at the right place.
Tsitsikamma zipline tour
We placed our stuff in the lockers provided, put on our helmet and other equipment, and posed for what was about to be the most flattering group photo ever taken in the history of zipline tours.
As an added service, Zipline Tour arranged for our photos to be taken while we were zigzagging along the different zipline adventure slides, taking in the beauty of Tsitsikamma. These photos can be bought afterwards, which we did. The following gems are only some of the photos taken that day:
As these photos so gracefully portray, this might not be the activity you are looking for if you are thinking about going on a first date and showcasing your most elegant self. Or perhaps that’s just my clumsiness speaking?
You see, our ziplining adventure allowed for me to showcase my clumsiest self (shocking, I know). At one point even, instead of managing to put down my feet on the landing platform, I fell short and began to slide back. Luckily, our guide was a quick thinker. He grabbed my foot and pulled me back. It was my shining moment.
But who cares about elegance? At least we had fun, right?
Or, most of us did…
Admittedly, not everyone in our group was a big fan of the heights. But they were great sports and went with those of us that were, which was very appreciated. Anyway, if you prefer to keep your feet on the ground, I would not really recommend this activity.
On the other hand, if you love your occasional adventure off the ground, this zipline tour was definitely worth its 375 rand. I would recommend good shoes, though, as you will have to walk from slide to slide.
The end of an amazing day
Overall, we had to try three times to find the correct location of our zipline tour, got way too many blooper pictures taken, and confirmed once again how I’m the most elegant woman you’ll probably ever meet (although some of my fellow road trippers are absolutely capable of matching me in that regard). But most importantly, we had a blast.
So when Fien’s birthday ended with a braai at Plettenberg Bay (because, you know, she’s a vegetarian), we had an amazing day of blunders and bliss to look back on.
Would you do a zipline tour? Why (not)?
